The Barmbek Adventist Church in Hamburg, Germany, devoted March 7 to the observance of the International Women’s Day of Prayer and organized a special Women’s Sabbath.
Bärbel Heger, the church’s Women’s Ministry leader, reports of a blessed and fulfilling day. Under the theme “Be Not Afraid,” led by Chantal Klingbeil, the participants were encouraged to take a fresh look at their fears. In her sermon, Chantal made it clear how we can deal with our fears—trusting that God holds us in His hand and catches us time and again.
After a shared lunch, which provided an opportunity for personal conversations, the theme was explored further in the afternoon. In an open discussion, the women received practical guidance on how to deal with fear so that it does not control their lives. The day concluded with a cozy coffee break in warm fellowship.
Afterward, Christine, a participant, shared her impressions:
How did you like the topic, and what did you take away from it?
“The theme ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ speaks directly to our times. I was particularly moved by the biblical story of the poor widow who cared for the prophet Elijah—despite her own hardships. She trusted God even though she barely knew him. Jesus also highlights her faith. The fellowship among us women was very enriching. During the get-to-know-you session, we learned what connects us to the congregation and the diverse interests each of us brings.”
What did you take away from the fellowship with the women?
“We engaged deeply with the topic of fear—how it manifests and is expressed individually. The practical approaches were particularly valuable: breathing exercises, improving sleep, talking with one another, and trusting in God’s Word and His promises.”
Why is a Women’s Sabbath important?
“The female perspective on the Bible is often refreshing and new. A Women’s Sabbath offers space to share one’s own life realities, concerns, and thoughts. The afternoon program, in particular, creates a safe space among women to express feelings, draw new strength, and experience fellowship.”
An all-around successful day that not only strengthened us spiritually but also deepened the fellowship among the women and provided new inspiration for everyday life.
