On Sunday, May 10, the Madrid Women’s Race took place for the 22nd time, a historic event in which the Alenza Women’s Network (MAR) – the Women’s Ministries organization of the Madrid Alenza Adventist church – joined thousands of women united in a demonstration of solidarity and fellowship.
Solidarity and Sports
The main goal of this sporting event is to raise funds for the Spanish Association Against Cancer, with a focus on breast cancer. Additionally, it aims to encourage women’s participation in sports, combat gender-based violence, and promote equality.
Sea of Pink on the Paseo de la Castellana
Madrid’s most iconic thoroughfare, the Paseo de la Castellana, was flooded by a “Sea of Pink” made up of thousands of mothers, sisters, daughters, nieces, and also some husbands and brothers, who had come from different parts of the Madrid Community. The Women’s Race is considered the only truly inclusive sporting event: anyone can participate regardless of physical condition.
Along the nearly 6-kilometer route, people could be seen walking or running, some in wheelchairs, others with canes, and even with baby strollers. All of them were taking part in a “Pink Party” where joy was the common thread, despite the persistent drizzle that fell throughout the race from start to finish.
MAR: ALENZA WOMEN’S NETWORK
About twenty women from the Women’s Ministry of the Alenza church enjoyed a moment of sisterhood and fellowship. Together they finished the race, thrilled by their accomplishment and eager to do it again next year. Afterward, they enjoyed a well-deserved breakfast in fellowship. In addition to participating in events like this, MAR promotes workshops, talks, and reflections: activities designed for the benefit and growth of all women in the community. A pink tide, one voice: the Alenza Women’s Network demonstrated that faith, solidarity, and sports can go hand in hand, leaving their mark on every kilometer of the Paseo de la Castellana.
