  • Social Work Without Borders: Adventus University Erasmus+ 2026 Institutional Review

The 2026 Erasmus+ initiative for Social Work students from Adventus University (Cernica, Romania)—coordinated by Dr. Emanuel Sălăgean—facilitated a comprehensive professional exchange across Italy. Spanning the cities of Rieti, Rome, Florence, and Turin, the program successfully synthesized academic theory, administrative practice, and direct humanitarian intervention.

Phase I: Rome and Rieti – Logistics and Field Operations

The initial phase centered on the logistical frameworks of humanitarian aid and the realities of urban vulnerability.
Humanitarian Logistics: In Rieti, students conducted a technical analysis of the ADRA warehouse operations, evaluating the administrative and logistical requirements of large-scale social assistance. Fieldwork included the strategic distribution of promotional materials to improve the visibility and accessibility of regional social services.
Public Advocacy: In Rome, participants delivered professional presentations within the Adventist community. These sessions served to promote the Social Work curriculum and current institutional projects, refining the students' professional communication and public relations competencies.
Direct Intervention: Collaboration with the Betania Association provided practical exposure to urban crisis management. Students assisted in food distribution programs for the homeless population, facilitating a first-hand assessment of social marginalization.
Case Management: Practical training concluded with administrative support at the ADRA center and direct assistance to a high-need family, allowing students to observe the trajectory of social intervention from institutional intake to domestic support.

Phase II: Florence – Institutional Models and Educational Integration
The visit to Florence focused on the intersection of specialized education and community service. By visiting the Adventist university, "Villa Aurora" Institute, students analyzed institutional models that integrate theological foundations with social action. This phase provided a broader understanding of how cultural and historical contexts influence the development and delivery of modern social services.

Phase III: Turin – Synthesis and Professional Consolidation
The program concluded in Turin, serving as the final stage for integrating theoretical knowledge with the practical insights gained throughout the mobilization.
Professional Identity: Students continued to deliver public presentations, synthesizing their field experiences for community stakeholders.
Role Clarification: These activities allowed participants to clarify the contemporary role of the social worker, emphasizing professional accountability and the necessity of active community involvement.

“The Erasmus+ program represents a remarkable opportunity for our students to participate in meaningful educational and professional training experiences in different European countries and beyond, helping them broaden their academic perspective and better understand the complexity of today’s social realities,” explained Dr. Emanuel Sălăgean. “At the same time, these experiences contribute greatly to their cultural enrichment through interaction with diverse communities, educational institutions, and social environments, encouraging openness, dialogue, and mutual understanding. Through direct involvement in practical, humanitarian, and community-based activities, students develop essential professional competencies and gain valuable real-life experience that prepares them for their future vocation and responsibility as social workers. We are deeply grateful for the opportunities made possible through the European community and for the privilege of collaborating with educational institutions and Adventist organizations on projects that unite academic formation with social engagement and humanitarian service,” concluded Sãlãgean.

Conclusion: Outcomes of Applied European Training
The Erasmus+ 2026 program underscores that professional social work training requires a paradigm shift from theoretical consumption to applied engagement. Through the diverse social landscapes of Italy, participants developed the adaptability and technical proficiency required to address complex community needs. This experience confirms that social work competency is fundamentally refined through direct interaction with diverse European social realities.
