The Bulgarian WM Department is concentrating on stories of women. Stories of challenges and victories. In the episode “A Prayer in the Casino,” Maya Marcheva prays, “– Lord, if You exist—either kill me or save me!”
Maya is only seven when she experiences abuse at the hands of three men. She doesn’t tell anyone. She hides what happened deep inside herself. The box of childhood closes, and life goes on—college, work, friends. Inside, the fear transforms into obsessions and grows: fear of intimacy, of trust, of men, of vulnerability itself.
An addict shuts out his or her emotions, shuts out the world, and the only thing they feel is nothingness. An absolute emptiness, a spiritual void that, to be filled, requires them first to rebuild themselves, to learn how to live, to adopt new habits. A life from the beginning.
The road back isn’t a miracle. Maya is rebuilding her life through therapy, discipline, honesty, and daily effort. Today, she works with people struggling with addiction and speaks openly about her past, not as someone without scars, but as someone who is no longer ashamed of them.
