  • Charity Project in Torrejón, Madrid, Spain

The Women's Ministry of the Church of Torrejón, in Madrid, launched a charity project to collect clothing and footwear for 30 women in prison. The initiative, which included organizing a charity bazaar selling soap and sweets, succeeded in meeting all the needs identified, thanks to the collaboration of the entire congregation.
The idea came up after it became known, through a team member who regularly visits the women's prison, that several inmates lacked adequate clothing. Faced with this situation, the Women's Ministries group took up the challenge and decided to organize a specific campaign to assist them. After contacting the pastor who frequents the prison, they received a list of 30 women in need of help. At first, the financial challenge seemed considerable. However, when the project was presented to the church, the response was immediate and positive. Some people offered to prepare complete packages with everything necessary; others, who could not buy the items, made donations so that the team was able to make the purchases.
A Charity Bazaar to Complete the Aid
To cover the remaining needs, the Women's Ministry organized a charity market on a Saturday afternoon at sunset.
We offered sweets, desserts, olives, honey, lemonade, soaps, creams, books, and diaries, all prepared and contributed by the team's volunteers.
The congregation's participation made it possible to raise the funds needed to put together all the packages.
An Unexpected Lesson
While preparing the aid packages, each inmate was asked to fill out a form indicating the sizes of coats, pants, tracksuits, pajamas, underwear, and shoes. However, many of the charts were returned incomplete; in several cases, only shoe sizes were listed.
When the pastor was asked why the forms had been only partially filled out, the answer was clear: “They only wrote down what they needed.” The team interpreted this gesture as a lesson in honesty and awareness of true need.
Women's Ministry would like to express its gratitude to the team and the Church of Torrejón for their generosity and constant support in this initiative, which has left a mark on both those who received the aid and those who promoted it. 1
