Local Church Tackles Effects of World Crises

Talks on Depression and Emotional Health in Reus, Spain

In a global context marked by crises, natural disasters, and conflicts, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Reus held, from March 22-23, 2025, a series of talks to reflect on depression and its implications in the lives of believers. Specialists and members of the congregation shared experiences and knowledge to face this challenge from a Christian and psychological perspective.
“How Long, Lord?”
It escapes no one's notice that today's society is living through one of the most tense moments in history. Crises, anguish and unpleasant surprises surround us on all sides: 216 fatalities and dozens of survivors have been victims of the flooding in Valencia, 1700 dead and hundreds affected, up to this moment, as a result of an earthquake in Myanmar (and Thailand), thousands in Ukraine or Gaza, hundreds drowning in shipwrecks to find a better future, accidents, diseases, suicides, ... And we ask ourselves like the prophet Habakkuk: “How long, Lord?”
Are we Christians unscathed by these events and should we remain unaffected by so much suffering? In the church of Reus, we paused this weekend to reflect on the consequences of all these anxieties that not only surround us, but also affect us.A Moment of Reflection on Depression
We spent a whole Sabbath pausing to consider the implications of depression and how our Christian and church experience can prevent it. By “geographical depression” we mean a lowering of ground levels. By “atmospheric depression” we mean a drop in the hectopascals that measure it. In the same way, by “human depression” we understand those moments in which we go through an emotional collapse and we wish that the earth swallows us up.
On Saturday morning, Jordi Abad presented cases of biblical characters who lived through moments of depression and how their religious experience helped them to overcome them.
In the afternoon, Cristina Salagean informed us about how depression occurs and how we can prevent it, incorporating life in the community of the congregation and biblical principles in our lifestyle.
Depression is a Disease
Nowadays the pressure of the environment is indeed so strong that it can overcome us and affect our emotional balance. In this case, we have to resort to psychological health specialists to receive the most appropriate treatment. Whenever we feel sick, we always go to the doctor. Depression is an imbalance of the neurological components, and it is good to go to the doctor to help us to recover that balance.
The Most Important Things First
After this reflection, we learned to put the most important things first so that the superfluous does not take away our balance. But this discovery is not new, Jesus told us: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and the rest shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33.We want to continue to depend on the Lord to protect us from a hostile environment and to keep us balanced with Him.
