International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8. This year, it was a good opportunity for a Sabbath with a special focus on women. The sisters of the Hamburg International Adventist Church celebrated the Women's Sabbath with the theme: “The gifts of women in the service of God”.
In the sermon, we reflected with Maricela Ochoa on the talents and gifts of women in world history and the Bible. Starting with Eve, we learned about many women who dedicated their lives to serving God and trusted him. They had something to say and made a difference in our world.
From the beginning, there was no hierarchy between the woman and the man.
“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman”, for she was taken out of man.’ Genesis 2:21-23NIV. The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’ Genesis 2:18. A suitable help for man. The word used to describe the role of the woman is: “ezer.”
Throughout the Bible and church history, we learn of many women who are our role models. We also know such women in our environment and our communities. We celebrate them and are grateful that they exist. “...but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31: 30b
After a delicious potluck, we heard a talk by the couple Monica and Smelling, who both work in nursing. They both gave us well-founded and well-explained information about breast cancer and self-examination.
All in all, the day was a successful and blessed program, conducted in German and Spanish.
Many thanks and God's blessings to Yasna and her team.
